Alexandria Rossoff Jewels and Rare Finds
Housed in an art-deco landmark, this 1920s cigar-store-turned-jewelry
shop still bears burn marks on its worn wooden countertops.
That's not the only bit of history here; about 75 percent
of the pieces are antique, chosen with care by owner Alexandria
Rossoff during her European travels. The other 25 percent
consist of rare finds, modern and exquisite gems, and
custom pieces. A certified gem appraiser, Alexandria Rossoff
has a following in the old carriage trade tradition; word
of mouth brings in many loyal customers.

Plugged In and Caffeinated
The Columbia City Gallery’s First Juried Exhibit
The Columbia City Gallery presents its First Annual Juried
Exhibition, Plugged in and Caffeinated. The work of seventeen
local artists has been selected for this exhibit, which
examines time in our “plugged in and caffeinated”
culture. Each work of art focuses on the artists’
view of time -- how industry, technology and automation
influence the need for more time, the phenomenon of time
“flying by”, time in slow motion, and our
culture’s attempt to alter the reality of time.
The jurors are Barbara Shaiman, Kamla Kakaria, and Larry
Calkins. Exhibit runs May 10 – July 9. Opening Night
Festivities will be held Saturday, May 13 from 5 –
8 pm.

SPRINGTIME IN FRANCE: THE FILMS OF LOUIS MALLE
In partnership with Seattle Art Museum, the Grand
Illusion is proud to screen two seldom-seen documentaries
that highlight
Malle's fascination with America and his concern for how
ordinary people
understand their place in society.
AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPINESS was commissioned as a part
of a series
celebrating the centenary of the Statue of Liberty. In
it, Malle,
himself an immigrant, talks to a wide range of other new
Americans to
illustrate how the face of immigration has changed. Moving
from
Vietnamese communities in California to Indian-owned hotels
in the deep
South, Malle delves into the meaning of the American dream
and how these
new citizens envision their place in society.
GOD'S COUNTRY is a moving portrait of a small rural town
in crisis.
Malle travelled to Glencoe, Minnesota in 1979 to begin
a PBS-sponsored
documentary on rural America. When he returned in 1985
to complete his
film, he found a town in decline, hollowed out by farm
failures and
desperate to halt the exodus of its citizens. Malle gives
voice to the
people who are still holding on, creating an unsettling
chronicle of a
difficult era.
Both of these films are unavailable on video! On Thursday
May 4th, SAM
hosts a screening of Malle's VIVA MARIA! at its MOHAI
location. Spring
is the perfect time to get out of the house and celebrate
cinematic
genius!
